At Traverse City Web Design, we’ve always had a healthy respect for technology. But after a recent challenge, we can confidently say: the robot apocalypse is still a long way off.
Let me tell you a story about our attempt to clean up an HTML document filled with messy, table-based layout code. We thought, “Sure, let’s give this a try with ChatGPT.” After all, this AI can write, code, and make a decent cup of virtual coffee (not really, but close enough). We figured cleaning up HTML would be a breeze.
What happened next was a humbling reminder of technology’s limits. ChatGPT tried to “clean up” the code, but in its enthusiasm to streamline, it deleted large portions of the HTML. Entire sections of the design were wiped out. The tables — the backbone of the layout — were either destroyed or converted into something completely different. The result was a clean, well-structured file that completely missed the point.
In the end, we realized something important: while AI is an incredible tool, it has a long way to go. AI can be helpful, but for now, it’s still a tool — not a replacement for human skill and experience.
