Call of the Night Frogs: A Northern Michigan Ambient Video from Old Mission Peninsula

Sometimes the best creative projects begin with a simple question: What happens if we point a camera toward the swamp at dusk and just let Northern Michigan speak for itself?

There is nothing AI about this video, it is about as raw and natural as it gets! 🙂

That was the beginning of Call of the Night Frogs, a 50-minute ambient nature video filmed on Old Mission Peninsula, north of Traverse City, Michigan. The camera is stationary. The view is simple. The frame faces the tree line at the edge of a Northern Michigan swamp as daylight fades and the frogs begin their evening chorus.

It is quiet. It is strange. It is beautiful. It is the kind of sound we hear outside our office windows while we are working late into the night — designing websites, writing code, editing pages, building layouts, and helping Michigan businesses make their place on the internet.

A Little Northern Michigan Background Noise

At Traverse City Web Design, most of our work happens behind screens. We write copy, optimize pages, manage hosting, solve technical problems, and shape digital spaces for businesses, organizations, nonprofits, libraries, and local institutions.

But our office is not in a glass tower or a downtown tech corridor. We are based near the end of Old Mission Peninsula, surrounded by woods, water, orchards, open sky, and wetlands.

That setting has become part of how we think about our work.

Northern Michigan has a rhythm to it. The wind moves through the trees. The lake changes color by the hour. The fields go quiet in winter. In spring and summer, the frogs start calling after sunset. It is not background noise, exactly. It is a reminder that the world is larger than the screen.

Call of the Night Frogs captures a little piece of that atmosphere.

Our First GoPro Experiment

This video was filmed using a GoPro HERO13 Black with a wide-angle lens. It was our first real test with the camera, and like most first experiments, it taught us a few things.

We come from the “f@$k around and find out” school of learning technology.

That approach has served us pretty well over the years. Web design, coding, photography, video, search engine optimization, AI tools, server management — you can read about all of it forever, but at some point you have to try it, break something, fix it, and learn from the process.  This video is a prime example.

We were excited to shoot something. So we put the camera near the swamp, pointed it toward the trees, and let the evening unfold.   The result is simple, raw, and surprisingly cool.

A Video for Working, Relaxing, or Letting the Room Breathe

Call of the Night Frogs is not a fast video. It is meant to be put on in the background.  Use it while you are working,  writing, coding. or just relaxing in the evening and want a little Northern Michigan nature in the room.  For us, it feels like the sound of working late on the edge of the woods.

Why We Are Making These Videos

Traverse City Web Design has always been rooted in place. We work with clients throughout Michigan and beyond, but our identity is closely tied to Traverse City, Old Mission Peninsula, and Northern Michigan. These short and long ambient videos are a way to share a little of that world.

They are also a creative outlet. Web design is practical work, but it is still design.  A quiet 50-minute video of frogs calling at dusk may seem very different from a custom website project, but both are shaped by the same basic question:

How do you create something people want to spend time with?  How do you capture something real in a digital form.  That is true whether we are designing a homepage, building a local business website, creating an online store, or filming a swamp at dusk.
