Web design today involves much more than creating a good-looking homepage. Designers juggle SEO, content strategy, code clean-up, case study writing, and social media—all while keeping projects on schedule. Fortunately, AI tools like ChatGPT can help web designers streamline many of these tasks.

At Traverse City Web Design, we use ChatGPT almost daily to improve our workflow, craft better content, and offer more value to our clients. These aren’t just theoretical tips—we’ve put every one of these into practice. Whether we’re cleaning up bloated HTML, building out SEO content plans, or writing a Facebook post to promote a new case study, ChatGPT helps us move faster and work smarter.

Whether you’re an independent freelancer or a growing agency, these ten use cases show how ChatGPT can be a true creative partner in your work.

[Note: we wrote all but one of these web design tips because we wanted to give readers REAL ways we use Chat GPT at Traverse City Web Design, and we do use it in a variety of way.  We wrote the content for half of the tips, and we used Chat GPT to write the last tip and half the content.]

1. Clean Up HTML, Remove CSS or XHTML Code, and Organize Messy Snippets

One of the most tedious parts of web design is cleaning up copied code. Whether you’re pulling HTML from Word, an old CMS, or a client’s previous site, you’ll often end up with bloated, disorganized, or outdated XHTML. ChatGPT can quickly clean this up, leaving you with streamlined code that’s ready to paste into Elementor, WordPress, or any other platform.

At Traverse City Web Design, we regularly paste code into ChatGPT and ask it to “remove all inline styles,” “strip all span tags,” or “convert this XHTML to modern HTML5.” It doesn’t just fix syntax—it gives you well-indented, human-readable code. If you ever find yourself fighting random div nests or wondering why a client’s copy-and-paste job broke your layout, ChatGPT can be your go-to fixer.

Another bonus: you can ask it to add classes to structure your code better or to move inline styles into a CSS block. It turns spaghetti code into something far more professional, saving you time and reducing frustration.

2. Write and Polish Case Studies for Your Portfolio

Creating compelling case studies is essential for showing off your past work, but many designers never get around to it. ChatGPT makes it easy to turn project notes, client feedback, and screenshots into narrative-driven case studies that build trust and authority.

At Traverse City Web Design, we use ChatGPT to write case studies for our projects—like the one we created for Penn Street Bakery or The Heracles Group. We simply paste in a rough project outline, include key talking points, and ask it to write a case study in our brand voice. It creates a clean first draft in seconds, which we then polish and personalize.

This process helps you capture the value of your work while it’s still fresh, and it gives your website a steady stream of new content. Bonus tip: Ask ChatGPT to extract SEO titles and meta descriptions directly from the case study when you’re done.

3. Generate SEO Visibility Reports and Backlink Opportunities

While ChatGPT doesn’t crawl the web in real-time, it can help you build SEO visibility reports based on up-to-date data from tools like Google Search Console, Ahrefs, or SEMrush. Just paste in your current backlinks, citations, or ranking keywords, and ask ChatGPT to help you summarize trends and find opportunities.

We often create visibility reports for our Hosting North clients. ChatGPT helps interpret the data: “Where are we mentioned online?” “What backlinks are strong or weak?” “Where can we improve our domain authority?” ChatGPT provides actionable insights that you can pass along to clients or use to shape your SEO strategy.

You can even feed it past blog posts and ask, “Which posts have no internal links?” or “Can you suggest how to update this content to improve SEO performance?” It works surprisingly well as an SEO strategist when given clear input.

4. Write and Schedule Blog Posts to Keep Your Site Active

Blogging is one of the easiest ways to boost your site’s search rankings—if you do it regularly. ChatGPT can help you brainstorm topics, outline posts, write full articles, and suggest SEO-friendly titles and headings. At Traverse City Web Design, we use it to write most of our long-form blog content, then tweak the tone to match our voice.

If you provide a general prompt like “Write a blog post about why Northern Michigan businesses need mobile-optimized websites,” ChatGPT will deliver a detailed draft in under a minute. Then you can ask it to refine the tone: “Make this sound more local,” or “Add a call-to-action for our free audit.”

We often take it further by asking ChatGPT to summarize the blog post into bullet points or social media posts (see Tip #9). This makes content distribution fast and cohesive.

5. Develop Copy for Your Website and Client Projects

Whether you’re launching a brand-new site or refreshing an old one, writing web copy can slow down the entire project timeline. ChatGPT helps you move faster without sacrificing quality. You can feed it a design layout and ask for headline suggestions, value propositions, calls-to-action, and about page bios.

For client work, we’ve found it helpful to paste in their raw content—emails, old brochures, or interviews—and ask ChatGPT to rewrite it in a cleaner, more web-friendly tone. You can even ask it to write different versions based on tone: “Give me three variations that sound professional, friendly, and bold.”

This is especially helpful when working with small businesses that struggle to describe themselves clearly. ChatGPT becomes your secret copywriter.

6. Craft SEO Titles, Keywords, and Meta Descriptions

Good SEO starts with the right language. ChatGPT can generate optimized page titles, meta descriptions, keyword ideas, and even schema markup. All you need to do is paste in a blog post, service description, or case study and say, “Suggest an SEO title and 10 related keywords.”

We do this constantly at Traverse City Web Design—especially when we’re writing blog posts or creating new service pages. ChatGPT is fast and specific. You can even tell it, “Use keywords that target Petoskey and Northern Michigan web design,” and it will regionalize your results.

Once you have a list of keywords, ask it to work them naturally into your copy or headings. This keeps your content readable and search-engine friendly without keyword stuffing.

7. Use Memory to Build a Brand-Savvy AI Assistant

Most users don’t realize that ChatGPT can remember your preferences if you have a ChatGPT Plus account. This makes it incredibly useful for designers and agencies who want consistent tone, branding, and context over time.

We’ve trained ChatGPT to remember things like: “Traverse City Web Design focuses on Northern Michigan businesses,” or “Hosting North is our managed WordPress hosting company.” With this memory, you can say things like, “Write a blog post for our brand,” and it knows your tone, audience, and goals.

To activate this, just say: “ChatGPT, remember that we made a site for Penn Street Bakery, and we focus on WooCommerce stores.” This creates a mini knowledge base you can build on over time.

8. Turn Blog Content Into Social Media Posts

Repurposing content is a smart way to stay visible across platforms, and ChatGPT makes this process seamless. After writing a blog post, we ask ChatGPT to “Write a Facebook post to promote this article,” then “Write a more professional LinkedIn version of the same content.”

It understands the different tones and formats of each platform. For Facebook, it might use a conversational hook and emojis. For LinkedIn, it’ll sound more authoritative and clean. You can also generate Twitter threads, Instagram captions, or even Pinterest pin descriptions—all from the same source content.

This creates a unified content strategy without doubling your workload. It also keeps your audience engaged and helps push traffic back to your site.

9. Build Better Proposals, Project Briefs, and Timelines

When onboarding new clients, you can use ChatGPT to develop project briefs, timelines, and proposals that sound professional and well-structured. Provide some bullet points and ask: “Create a two-page project proposal that includes scope, timeline, and deliverables.”

This is useful when working on retainer plans, maintenance packages, or long-term redesigns. Hosting North uses this feature to pitch new management plans to clients. The AI can include legal-friendly language, payment schedules, and even editable fields if you’re using Google Docs or PDFs.

It’s like having a personal assistant who never gets tired of formatting proposals.

10. BONUS TIP: Use ChatGPT as a Brainstorming Partner for Creative Blocks

Every designer hits creative ruts—whether you’re stuck on color schemes, can’t name a new service, or need layout ideas for a stubborn homepage. ChatGPT can give you fresh perspective in seconds. Just say: “Give me five headline ideas for a minimalist homepage for a Northern Michigan design firm,” or “Suggest alternative names for a hosting service focused on WordPress.”

You can also use it for brainstorming taglines, menu labels, feature comparisons, or pricing tiers. It doesn’t replace your creativity—but it fuels it. At Traverse City Web Design, we treat ChatGPT as a co-creator. Sometimes we use its ideas directly; other times they spark a better version of our own.

The key is to ask better questions and give it real context. When you do, ChatGPT becomes less of a tool and more of a design partner.

Final Thought

ChatGPT isn’t just a content generator—it’s a workflow accelerator. It helps web designers focus on high-value, creative work by handling the repetitive, analytical, and organizational tasks that slow us down. When you pair your expertise with AI efficiency, you’re not replacing creativity—you’re freeing it.
